User targeting on mobile devices will be very precise, if Apple’s plans for ad-sponsosred applications are any indication. Combining this with the location-awareness of the devices leads to interesting applications for augmented reality: the screen will show, like a camera, the surroundings, with the picture enriched by information. For example, where is the next bakery, where do I enter the subway… Real-world ads, looked at through the device, could reveal additional information. It’ll be only a matter of time until the first augmented reality navigation apps will start to introduce “sponsored tips” to every place on the planet. Why, there’s no reason the panhandler at the corner shouldn’t deliver an additional pitty-pitch via augmented reality.
